Felonies

Felonies
A felony is the most serious type of crime that a person can commit. In Georgia, the following offenses may be charged as felonies:

- Rape
- Robbery
- Aggravated Assault
- Kidnapping
- Drug Trafficking
- Carjacking
- Murder

Drug Charges

Drug Charges
The State of Georgia takes drug offenses very seriously. In Georgia, drug possession can be “actual” or “constructive” – meaning the drugs do not have to be in your pocket or on your person in order for you to be charged and found guilty of possession. It is also important you know that your potential sentence depends on the type of drug you were caught with. In the Georgia Code §16-13-1, drugs are classified by “schedules” in accordance with federal classifications.

If you are convicted of drug possession, your driver’s license will be suspended. If this is your first offense, there is a mandatory suspension of 6 months. If this is your second offense, you will lose your license for 1 year. And if this is your third or subsequent drug possession charge, you will lose your driver’s license for at least 2 years.

Drug trafficking is essentially the act of transporting or moving illegal drugs from one place to another, hence these charges are very different than simple drug possession charges. The penalties for drug trafficking in Georgia vary depending on the quantity of drugs involved, as well as the type of drug, but a drug trafficking charge could result in up to 30 years in prison, high fines and will affect the rest of your life.

If you are facing drug charges, an experienced Georgia lawyer can make all the difference in the outcome of your case. Call the criminal defense attorneys at JL Weaver Law if you're in Pickens, Cherokee, Dawson, Gilmer or Fannin county: 706-253-1001.

Domestic Violence Charges

Domestic Violence Charges
The legal definition of family or domestic violence under Georgia law is the occurrence of one or more abusive acts, as defined by the state, against spouses and children, partners, and other family members or household guests who reside in the same household.

Depending on the circumstances, domestic violence charges in Georgia may be classified as either a misdemeanor or felony, with penalties including fines, community service, mandatory counseling, and imprisonment.
