John Luke Weaver – Founding Partner

When your freedom and future are on the line, you need a criminal defense attorney who doesn't just know the law—you need someone who knows how to win in North Georgia courtrooms. John Luke Weaver has built his reputation by taking on the cases other lawyers avoid and delivering results that protect his clients' lives, careers, and families.

Trial-Tested Experience You Can Trust

John Luke was born and raised in Jasper, Georgia. His roots run deep in the North Georgia Mountains – his family has lived in the area since the 1840s. After graduating from Pickens County High School, he attended Berry College where he graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in History and Government. While at Berry he was the President of his graduating class, advisor to the Dean, and recipient of the Voice of Berry Award, which goes to the student who best advocates for student interests.

While attending law school at The University of Georgia, John Luke served on the Executive Board of the Mock Trial Team and served as the Closing Argument Coordinator. He also founded and served as President of the Rural Law Society, a group dedicated to bringing quality legal representation to rural Georgia. He also took part in the Law School’s Prosecution Clinic Program where he worked at the Cobb County Solicitor’s office prosecuting DUIs and other misdemeanors. John Luke furthered his clinical experience prosecuting felonies at the Athens-Clarke County District Attorney’s Office. In both Athens and Cobb he prosecuted cases to jury verdict, being the first person in his graduating class to go in front of a jury.

Since establishing the J.L. Weaver Law Firm in 2012 in a small-storage room in his uncle’s law office, John Luke has grown the practice to two locations in both Jasper and Canton. In the years since, Mr. Weaver has had the honor of defending clients against the power of the government, in all matter of criminal cases such as Murder, Vehicular Homicide, Rape, Child Molestation, Theft, RICO, Drug Offenses, Domestic Violence, D.U.I. and all Traffic Offenses.

It is John Luke’s core belief that people charged with the most heinous crimes deserve to have their rights under the constitution vigorously protected because if the government is unchecked to take the freedom of those accused with a crime, then what is going stop them from taking freedom from the rest of us?

John Luke has tried the longest and most complex jury trials in Cherokee County history. That’s not a marketing claim—it’s a track record that speaks for itself.

While other attorneys are quick to push plea deals, John Luke prepares every case like it’s going to trial, because that’s what it takes to get real results whether you’re negotiating or standing in front of a jury.

The judges, prosecutors, and court staff in Cherokee, Pickens, Gilmer, and Fannin counties know John Luke’s name—and they know he comes prepared.

In 2016, John Luke, seeing how some of his clients were being taken advantage of by “billboard” lawyers and other large volume based personal injury/accident law firms, Mr. Weaver expanded the practice to represent clients in personal injury cases, such as car accidents, premises liability, and medical malpractice. John Luke believes that his clients deserve compassion and understanding working through an injury cases, not simply being a policy or file number. Also, unlike the large billboard law firms, he promised to never take an attorney fee larger than the settlement or jury verdict the client receives. This is the cornerstone of his injury practice.

In 2025, Mr. Weaver was selected as an AV-Preeminent Attorney for the highest level of professional excellence by Martindale-Hubbell, the oldest peer rating system of attorneys in the United States. John Luke also been featured on Court TV, Dateline-NBC, 48 Hours-CBS and Killer Cases-A&E.

Outside of the firm, Mr. Weaver’s professional associations include serving as the Vice-President of the Appalachian Bar Association, Vice-Chair of the Development Authority of Pickens County, and the Pickens County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. He previously served on the Board of Directors for the Cherokee County Office of Indigent Defense, Pickens Historical Society and Rotary Club of Jasper. In his personal time, John Luke enjoys working in his yard, traveling, golf, the Georgia Bulldogs, collecting vinyl records, coaching youth football, being a member of the First Baptist Church of Jasper and spending time with his wife and four children.
